Cam Residents — Have Your Say on Local Government Changes!
Big decisions are being considered about how local government in Gloucestershire could be organised in the future — and your voice matters! This government consultation is open until 26 March 2026 and we encourage everyone in our community to click the link and have your say.
Here’s a quick summary of what’s being proposed and why it matters for us in Cam:
What’s being discussed?
Right now, Gloucestershire is served by a county council and six district councils. The consultation sets out three possible ways to change this structure into new “unitary authorities” — councils that would deliver all local services (like planning, roads, social care, waste collection and more):
- One county-wide unitary council — replaces all seven councils with a single authority for the whole county.
- Two unitary councils (East/West split) — one covering the east (Cheltenham, Cotswolds, Tewkesbury) and one covering the west (Gloucester, Forest of Dean, Stroud).
- Greater Gloucester and a second council — one expanded council centred around Gloucester and a second covering other areas.
Each option aims to simplify how services are delivered and make decision-making more efficient — but they also come with different implications for local identity, community voice, and how services are shaped near you.
Why this matters for Cam:
Whatever structure is chosen will influence how local services are organised in and around our community — from how planning and housing decisions are made to how responsive local services feel day-to-day.
Please take a moment to share your views and experiences. Your input really does count in shaping the future of local government here in Gloucestershire.
